Seattle Storm, a perennial contender

The defending WNBA champions Seattle Storm are in the midst a reconstruction process. They were able to win the championship in 2010 thanks to the help of Sue Bird, an elderly woman, and Lauren Jackson (a dominant stretch-5 from Australia). Jackson's inability to compete led to a fall in the standings. However, the Storm still drafted new players during the 2015 draft and 2016.

Chicago Mercury is a deep playoff team

The Mercury made a variety of trades this off-season which should improve their performance over last season. The team received Bridget Pettis and Jillian Alleyne as well as Kim Smith and the 13th pick from the 2012 draft. They also acquired two players in WNBA Draft, and a first-round selection in the 2013 draft from Minnesota Lynx. They also traded first round picks to the Minnesota Lynx, Los Angeles Sparks, and Temeka John. In return, the Mercury received a second-round pick in the 2013 draft and a third-round pick in the 2014 draft from the New York Liberty.
