
The USA has a long history supporting women's sports teams. Biney, Schmitt up to Edwards and Vollmer are all examples of women athletes who are making waves within the sports world. Yet, there are some female sportsmen that merit special recognition, despite all the victories of women's team sports. Let's take a look at some of these more prominent ones. Biney
Maame Bijny, an American short track speedskater, won bronze in the Women’s Short Track event of the 2018 Winter Olympics. Schmitt
Allison Schmitt is one of the most decorated American female athletes. After the 2012 Olympic Games, she was dropped from the national team as well as the world championships. She also struggled to cope with depression. She was even able to fall into deep depression. She couldn't compete in the 2016 Olympic trials, and she even considered driving off the road. Thankfully, her determination to return to the pool was rewarded and she has become a US Olympic swimming champion again.
Vollmer
Dana Whitney Vollmer, a five-time Olympic gold medalist, is also a former world record holder for swimming. In the 2004 Summer Olympics, she set a new world record. She was also awarded the Olympic bronze medal in the event and the bronze at the 2008 Summer Olympics. As a former college swimmer, Vollmer has been training for years in order to be a world-class athlete. These are five reasons Vollmer excels:
Joyner-Kersee
Jacqueline Joyner Kersee, USA is a retired track-and-field athlete who has won four Olympic medals including three golds, two silvers and one bronze. She is a legend in the long jump, and the heptathlon. She was awarded the 1984 Olympic long jump title. Joyner-Kersee also won the silver medal in the long jump in 1996.
Evans
Aja L. Evans, a bobsledder, is an Olympic medalist for Team USA. She is also a brakeman on bobsled. She was born in Chicago and was an All-American shotputter and track & field City Champion. Evans was an All-American in track & field and won the shot put title at the University of Illinois. Her Olympic performance came after she joined the bobsled team in 2012.
Voisin
Maggie Voisin from the United States is a female Olympic athlete. After breaking her leg, she was unable to compete at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. She returned to competing at the 2018 Winter Olympics, but missed the podium after suffering a torn left ACL. Voisin was unable to compete for eight years due to the injury, but Voisin is back.
Retton
Retton was a 2004 member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. This organization was created by the U.S government to encourage Americans of all ages and increase their physical activity. This council is part of United States Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Public Health and Science. While the bill did not become law, Retton met with its sponsor and helped to drop the proposal.
