Mental Health Resources for San Jose State Women's Soccer

Coach Tina Estrada and her San Jose State women's soccer team are on a roll. We will be discussing the recent success of the Spartans and Estrada’s journey. We also talk about the university's mental wellness resources for student-athletes.

Estrada's success

Estrada, who became assistant coach of the women's soccer program at San Jose State in 2017, has a similar pedigree to Hanson. She was an All-American college soccer player, and was also a member of the U.S. under-17 national team. Estrada was a three time all-WCC forward at Santa Clara and played in four NCAA Tournaments. She was named NSCAA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2015.

Estrada hails from Fremont in California but currently resides in Walnut Creek. Estrada has twice won the Mountain West Tournament and was named National Assistant coach of the year. Her teams have won five straight conference tournaments. Additionally, she has coached two NCAA Tournament-qualifying Spartans.

SJSU's recent success

The recent success of SJSU women's soccer has been attributed to several players. Most notably Dorthe Hoppius won the MVP award for the team, but she will not be back with the Spartans during the 2018 season. Jamilecxth Becerra, the sophomore Jamilecxth Becerra won Mountain West Newcomer's of the Year. Becerra scored seven goals and five game-winning goals. Darriell Franklin was also named the MW defensive players of the year. He was also selected to the All-MW First Team.


New facilities for Spartans have been key to their success. Spartan Beach, Spartan Baseball Practice Facility, and Spartan Beach were two recent additions. The Spartans have also added these facilities to their campus. Next year, they will open the Spartan Athletics Center.

Coach Tina Estrada's career

Estrada is the interim head coaching of the San Jose State women’s football team. For four years, Estrada was a Spartans assistant and was most recently Associate Head coach. Lauren Hanson left after eight seasons and she was resigned. Hanson had been the winningest coach in school history.

Estrada was a stellar player at Santa Clara University. Estrada has been an assistant head coach and great assistant for many programs. She has the potential to become one among the most exciting young head coaches for women's division one soccer. Estrada has an exceptional teaching ability, excellent communication skills and outstanding leadership skills.

SJSU's mental health resources for student-athletes

SJSU student-athletes have access to many mental health resources. Many resources are targeted at athletes' needs. For example, Support for Sport helps athletes find mental health referrals and talk about mental health issues with teammates. LGBTQ+ Support offers stories and perspectives about being gay in sport. ULIFELINE offers college mental health resources. Counseling Services also has a student-athlete self-help resource page. Health and Wellness Education also has a website with a variety of information about mental health topics.

SJSU's Counseling and Psychological Services provides quality services to students. This department examines the individual and provides guidance to assist them in becoming productive members of society. This department offers counseling on a variety of topics and is located on floor 3 of the Student Wellness Center.
